You Make a Difference Award: December 2022

Amherst & Greenfield Urgent Care Team

Congratulations to the Amherst & Greenfield Urgent Care Team on being chosen as the recipient of the December You Make a Difference Team Award!

With the rapid surge of the Omicron virus last year, it was determined the COVID drive thru testing site would need to reopen quickly.

In an effort to use staff to cover the drive thru on the main hospital campus, the Amherst and Greenfield Urgent Care staff were approached about the concept of temporarily closing the Greenfield Urgent Care site during the month of January and consolidating those patients at the Amherst Urgent Care location.

Without hesitation, all staff agreed to the request. Within a week, the drive thru was reopened to accommodate the surge of testing requests. By reopening the drive-thru, patients and employees who needed testing during the Omicron surge had access to same-day testing.

Administrative Director, Clinical Services, Cathy Reed, says she was proud to nominate this team. “This group of staff truly made a difference during this very challenging and stressful time.”

Congratulations to Kelly Cavanaugh, RN on the Telemetry unit on being honored as the December recipient of the You Make a Difference Award!

The You Make a Difference Award is recognition for team members who are making a difference for patients & families, for their coworkers, and in their community every day.

As charge nurse of the Telemetry Unit, Kelly is consistently working towards making a better experience for both patients and staff.  She is always checking to make sure the patients on the unit feel well cared for and that their needs are always met. She makes sure that the staff members are not overwhelmed and are able to give excellent care and has been known to offer a helping hand to newer nurses, as they learn their new roles and assignments.

Throughout the pandemic, Kelly has been a constant source of knowledge and reassurance for staff – she listens to them and brings any concerns to leadership and helps to problem-solve.  She is focused on patient safety and throughput, always bringing patients to the floor as quickly as possible to ensure they are safe and in the appropriate space. Ann Lebrun, Interim CNO, shared that Kelly’s ”positive attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes to deliver excellent patient care make her a wonderful leader on the floor and a role model for our newer nurses.”

Thank you, Kelly, for making a difference for our patients and our staff every day!

You Make a Difference Award: September 2022

Patricia Chapdelaine

Congratulations to Patricia Chapdelaine, Chemotherapy Pharmacy Technician for the Mass General Cancer Center, on being honored as the September recipient of the You Make a Difference Award!

Patty works within the pharmacy department as the sole chemotherapy pharmacy technician for the Mass General Cancer Center at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Patty’s work environment within the sterile hazardous clean room is one that most of us can not relate to. The process of entering and leaving the room where she works requires many steps and takes time to ensure sterility is maintained within the Clean Room Suite.

An example of Patty’s quality standard was seen during our most recent Joint Commission survey. During normal operations, she was remotely observed via our camera system by The Joint Commission auditor without her knowledge and then again observed in the clean room. In each instance, Patty displayed a consistent effort to maintain a sterile environment demonstrating her constant focus on quality and safety. This is particularly noteworthy as there have been rapidly evolving regulations that govern this area of the pharmacy. That being said, Patty has made all efforts to solicit this information and feedback so that she continues to deliver the utmost highest quality of care. Observations of Patty within the Clean Room Suite resulted in a “no findings” from the auditor which was a huge win for the entire hospital!

While many of the attributes described above speak to the quality of Patty’s work, it cannot be understated the contributions that Patty makes to the entire pharmacy team. First and foremost, she always has a smile (you can always tell Patty is smiling even with a mask on, she has perfected the “smile with your eyes” so to say) and will do anything to help. Aside from her normal and extensive duties within the Clean Room, she often helps the central pharmacy team whenever there is need. Her collaborative nature within the clean room has invited others to offer her their support and thus leading to a more cohesive pharmacy team.

While she is not often physically seen due to the role she plays, Patty is truly the individual behind the curtain who is the “real Wizard” of the Cancer Center pharmacy operations and Makes a Difference in the lives of patients and colleagues every day at Cooley Dickinson!

Want to personally congratulate Patty? Send a Kudos for Coworkers and thank Patty for her amazing work!

You Make a Difference Team Award: August 2022

Emergency Department Coding and Documentation Improvement Team

Congratulations to the Emergency Department Coding and Documentation Improvement Team on being chosen as the recipient of the August You Make a Difference Team Award!

The Emergency Department Coding and Documentation Improvement Team Members:

Rebecca Bench, Professional Development
Jan Halloran, HIM
Emily Landry, HIM
Sara McKeown, Emergency Department
Lynn Parent, HIM
Sue Pierce, Emergency Department
Robert Redwood, MD Emergency Department
Laura Wells, HIM

Back in October of 2017, when CDHC went live with Epic, the Emergency Department coders hit the ground running with two new processes; charging and coding the professional side of the ED billing process, and learning a new process for the hospital side. They learned the documentation guidelines for professional E&M (evaluation and management) services and the new MGB charging matrix for the hospital billing.

During this process they had to make sure the average ED level was not impacted, as it would have a direct effect on our hospital reimbursement. The team worked closely with MGB to make sure they were aware of the issues with the ED charging matrix and how it was impacting CDH. Dr. Redwood met with the coders monthly educating them on the severity of the care the ED providers were delivering. This was a tremendous learning experience for all involved and with Dr. Redwood’s partnership, the team improved the provider ED documentation and coding.

The ED coding team also worked with the ED nursing staff on their documentation for hospital reimbursement and with the ED nursing leadership to achieve improved documentation. Sara McKeown and Jan Halloran partnered with the MGB ED nursing and coding leadership, to improve their understanding of the complexity of the nursing assessments as they relate to calculating the E&M level we charge for hospital reimbursement. The improvements that the team made in the calculations used for technical E&M levels are now included in the MGB coding policy for ED E&M levels!

Through this team’s hard work and efforts, the average professional and hospital ED levels have increased and have had a tremendous impact on patient care and reimbursement. This is a wonderful example of how colleagues from various departments can work as a team to make a difference! Thank you, Emergency Department Coding and Documentation Improvement Team for Making a Difference!

Want to personally congratulate members of the ED Documentation Improvement Team? Send a Kudos for Coworkers and thank each of them for their amazing work!

You Make a Difference Award: August 2022

Colleen Foley

Congratulations to Colleen Foley, Medical Technologist in the Lab, on being honored as the August recipient of the You Make a Difference Award!

The You Make a Difference Award is recognition for team members who are making a difference for patients & families, for their coworkers, and in their community every day. We recognize Colleen for being a role model that her team members look up to, and for living our organizational values every day.

While processing COVID specimens to be sent to our reference labs for testing, Colleen discovered that an entire day’s worth of samples collected on pre-procedure patients had not yet been logged into the receiving reference lab, yet they had been picked up and transported by the courier. Colleen began investigating and also reached out to her manager to alert of the potential issue. After several hours of investigation, the samples were located at the reference lab and were processed, which prevented a delay in being able to perform the impacted patients’ procedures. Colleen’s discovery of the issue brought forward an opportunity to strengthen the process in our laboratory for tighter checks and balances being placed to identify this type of issue sooner. Colleen’s attention to detail and persistence in locating the samples prevented any delay in procedures for these patients and helped to assure this type of delay would not happen to future patients.

Want to personally congratulate Colleen? Send a Kudos for Coworkers and thank Colleen for her amazing work!

Alexus was patient, understanding and went with the flow without even a hint of negativity. Despite being new to the home healthcare setting, she transitioned effortlessly and seems to have truly found her calling. While building onto her clinical experiences and case management skills, Alexus also enhanced our progressing culture of a more united team supporting one another.

Marissa Maheu, VNAH Clinical Manger, nominated Alexus for this award and shared these comments; “As a manager, I couldn’t ask for a better member on our team. Alexus works seamlessly with her peers. She has taken the extra time for each of her high and complex caseloads with patience and compassion to ensure they get the best possible care- all while maintaining great communication with all involved. Alexus epitomizes the Cooley Dickinson values and is an asset to our team!”

Alexus is described as extremely self-driven and is always looking for ways to learn or improve and often seeks out opportunities to build on her nursing skills. She is motivated, attentive, and reliable which are all characteristics that are essential to building a quality healthcare team.

You Make a Difference Award: April 2022

Jacqueline Howard

Congratulations to Jacqueline Howard, CDMG Finance Director, on being honored as the April recipient of the You Make a Difference Award!

Whether it’s budget preparation, contracts/compensation or other special projects, what’s most appreciated from Jackie (in addition to the high quality of her work) is her collaboration.

She is always easy to approach, and easy to work with; conversations are always constructive and forward- moving.

During the award celebration last week, VP of CDMG Kevin Neill expressed his congratulations and stated that “we are so incredibly fortunate to have Jackie on our team!”

“The volume of work that Jackie does in support of the medical group is significant and she keeps everything impeccably organized, thoroughly vetted, and completed on time,” said Kevin.

Jackie’s daily work in support of CDMG alone earned her nomination of You Make a Difference Award recognition. But what shines more light on her performance is a recent ambulatory space analysis she did in support of our organizational strategic planning process. CDMG is constantly growing and evolving, and in order to effectively manage our growth, we needed to have a comprehensive space plan to inform decision making about where to place new providers and to determine if we needed new space.

Jackie toured all of our ambulatory sites, spoke with leadership at the sites and did a comprehensive analysis. Through her work, we were able to see opportunities at virtually all of our sites to optimize space use. Jackie created an algorithm to help teams see where we had opportunity for growth in existing space. Jackie’s work allows us to make more informed recruitment decisions, based on thoughtful space planning. This project was huge, and Jackie turned it around very quickly.

Added Kevin, “She does everything very quietly and without fanfare. We appreciate all that Jackie does!”

Want to personally congratulate Jackie? Send a Kudos for Coworkers and thank Jackie for her amazing work!

Happy Frates-Montague

Congratulations to Happy Frates-Montague, Revenue Auditor, on being selected as the February Honoree of the You Make a Difference Award!

“Happy is an extremely hard worker and manages a very large workload, which she takes pride in getting it done and completing it always to the best of her ability”, said co-nominator, Michelle Kososki, Pharmacy Director.

Happy was requested to assist with the compliance piece of the controlled substance diversion and detection program, by ensuring that the committee was adhering to internal policies and accurately recording the activities of the committee in the event of an audit by the Department of Public Health (DPH). Given that the topic of controlled substance diversion was not familiar to Happy, she took it upon herself to extensively research the topic and share her findings so that the committee was better informed.

Happy has strong computer skills including reporting and programming and utilized those skills to create a reporting tool for the nurse managers. This tool is used as a universal template for the Nurse Managers that would foster a consistent approach to tracking daily activities involving controlled substances. Happy is being recognized for her ingenuity, creativity, and her overall contribution to save nursing manager time and improve the system for controlled substance management.

Her partnership with the various teams (Nursing, Pharmacy, Anesthesia, Performance Improvement, Information Technology, Compliance, etc.) to unify towards one common objective “exemplifies the value of Collaboration”, said co-nominator, Scott DeCesare, Pharmacy Supervisor.

Happy’s approach in helping others is to promote them and help them feel their issues are most important. Her unwillingness to compromise on anything but perfect tools for those that she works with exemplifies the value of Uphold Quality.

Thank you, Happy for making a difference!

Want to personally congratulate Happy? Send a Kudos for Coworkers and thank Happy for her amazing work!

Wanda Rodriguez

Congratulations to Wanda Rodriguez, Rehabilitation Aide, on being selected as the January Honoree of the You Make a Difference Award!

Wanda works as a Rehab Aide in the outpatient Rehab Services clinics. In an effort to assure all clinics were ready for the most recent Joint Commission survey, Wanda traveled to each individual site. Wanda made sure each site was organized; ensuring that all stock had been reviewed for any expired product, redesigned equipment log sheets and made sure all equipment had been checked and stickered by Biomed.  Wanda also mentored a newer Rehab Aide to be prepared for the surveyor and to have the confidence to speak to the surveyor without fear. During the actual survey, Wanda led the surveyor through one of the sites, and the next day of the survey was at the site with the new Rehab Aide to provide support. The new Rehab Aide was so well prepared, that Wanda stood back and watched him succeed. Wanda truly made a difference in the success of the Joint Commission survey of the Rehab sites and we are so lucky to have her on our team!

You Make a Difference Team Award: November 2021

VNAH Hospice Team

During the month of November, the home care and hospice community honors the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists, and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. Last week we celebrated National Homecare & Hospice month by honoring the VNAH Hospice Team with the You Make a Difference Team Award.

A hospice team member is one that commits to ensuring comfort and peace to not only the patient but for the family and loved ones. Many say, “Oh, I could never do what you do.”  It certainly takes a person with compassion, a desire to help those who are most vulnerable, and someone who gives selflessly to be a witness to another’s passing. Hospice care is specialized, with experience and knowledge that is vast. No one patient or family are identical, and each patient requires an individualized plan meeting their needs physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The hospice team are professionals who willingly join a specialized program offering relief to patients who are suffering and ensuring them death with dignity.

Jennifer Crain, VNAH Patient Care Services Director, who nominated the team shared this message during the celebration; “Hospice care is not the type of care or work that can be stored away at the end of a shift.  It is a heavy burden to carry bearing witness to those who have reached the end of life. The emotional, physical, and spiritual impacts are felt deeply for those who work each day, tirelessly helping those who have elected the benefit of hospice care.”

The hospice team works with a diverse population with individualized needs and desires.  This year not unlike others, the hospice team have met young patients, patients with young children, mothers and fathers, sisters, brothers, friends, and so many more whose time is limited. This is where it takes a skilled team to surround the patient and family with support, uniquely designed to their needs. Spiritual care, social work, bereavement, and volunteer services develop plans to ensure conversations, understanding, and a plan for ongoing care and support.

Together, the hospice team have cared for over 188 patients and their families. Despite the most challenging times, the work of hospice does not waiver. Meeting those who need support, guidance, and compassionate care as they face death is provided every day by this team of caring individuals embracing a philosophy spoken by Dame Cicely Saunders, “You matter because of who you are.  You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.”

Thank you, VNAH Hospice Team, for your commitment to our organizational mission of providing our patients and community with exceptional, compassionate, and personalized care.

You are all making a difference!

You Make a Difference Award: September 2021

Greg Ludwiczak

Congratulations to Greg Ludwiczak, Telemetry RN, on being chosen as the recipient of the September You Make a Difference Award!

The You Make A Difference Award is recognition for team members who live up to the values of our organization and are making a difference for patients, coworkers, and in the community.

As charge nurse of the Telemetry unit, Greg is responsible for ensuring that everything on the unit runs smoothly, and all our patients are kept safe. This is a pretty tall order some nights, as the revolving door of Tele will sometimes admit 8-12 patients during his 12-hour shift.

However, through all the chaos, Greg remains calm and positive while supporting the staff on the unit. During the award celebration, Ann Lebrun, Clinical Nurse Director, had this to say about Greg; “colleagues know that they can count on Greg to help them deal with whatever problem is rearing its ugly head, and he will do so with a sense of humor and a smile. Greg always keeps throughput moving on the unit, makes sure his patients are safe from harm while receiving excellent care, and supports his colleagues in any way they need.”

Thank you for being such a great charge nurse, Greg! You are truly making a difference!

You Make a Difference Team Award: August 2021

Lactation Consultant Team

Congratulations to the CBC Lactation Consultant Team on being chosen as the recipient of the August You Make a Difference Team Award!

The Lactation Consultant Team offers support for patients and their babies even after they are discharged from the hospital. This team is available for virtual or in-person visits and offer personalized, hands-on help. The Lactation Consultant Team has done tremendous work during the COVID pandemic to ensure that the services that they provide to our patients and the community were uninterrupted. Early on, the team used virtual technology for group Breast Feeding classes, as well as 1:1 consults and assistance. Judy Hatch presented a proposal, which was later accepted, to make follow-up phone calls to all breastfeeding patients. This process has been a great success and allowed patients the access to our expert lactation team post discharge.

This team was very active in creating poster presentations and other educational activities which were required for the nurses and providers during the Baby Friendly re-designation process. The Lactation Consultant Team has also updated the Cooley Dickinson Lactation webpage and made improvements to current lactation tools and handouts on the unit.

Thank you, CBC Lactation Consultant Team, for your commitment to our organizational mission of providing our patients and community with exceptional, compassionate, and personalized care.

You are all making a difference!

You Make a Difference Award: August 2021

Mary Fournier

Congratulations to Mary Fournier, Lead Pharmacy Technician, on being chosen as the recipient of the August You Make a Difference Award!

As a member of the Cooley Dickinson team for 20 years, it is difficult to convey the impact Mary has throughout the hospital on a daily basis. Mary is the Lead Pharmacy Technician, but her roles extend far beyond her title.

Mary is described by her manager Scott DeCesare, Pharmacy Supervisor, as the pharmacy “coach” who ensures the workflow of the pharmacy stays on track throughout each day to ensure that no patient is kept waiting for any medication.  Mary is the pharmacy “operator”, taking on many of the calls in the pharmacy and collaborates with her team to ensure all needs are met.  Mary is a “problem-solver”, there are many unique challenges faced by all team members and Mary is often sought out for her extensive knowledge and readiness to collaborate in working toward a solution. A recent example of her exceptional character is when the pharmacy team was tasked with drawing up COVID vaccines for clinics at the hospital and across the CDMG practices. Mary was able to generate a template for the labels, which could be easily modified and attached to the syringes regardless of site. The forward-thinking, efficient, and quality driven output from Mary is truly inspirational.

Mary embraces all new team members and ensures that they feel welcome and comfortable asking questions when navigating their daily duties. She establishes the framework for how each student is expected to perform during their learning experience and ensures the activities are in support of maintaining a high level of care for patients.

Most importantly, Mary is a “team leader”, she creates a vision of what patient care should look like at Cooley Dickinson and inspires the pharmacy team to engage in that vision.

For all the roles that Mary plays within the pharmacy and within the hospital, Mary truly does “Make a Difference.”

Thank you, Mary for living the Cooley Dickinson values every day!

You Make a Difference Award: July 2021

Michael Crowley

Congratulations to Michael Crowley on being chosen as the July recipient of the You Make a Difference Award! Mike was honored last week during a surprise celebration with his management team and members of the Recognition Steering Committee.

The You Make A Difference Award is recognition for team members who are making a difference for patients, coworkers, and in the community. Mike was recognized for being a role model that his team members look up to, and for living our organizational values every day.

As the primary phlebotomist at Northampton Area Pediatrics we are incredibly grateful for Mike and his amazing work! Mike is especially good at working with children and had this to say about them, “Kids are amazing. Most everything I do is terrifying to children. But I have found if you just take the time to talk to them and explain what you are doing, in age specific terms, almost every single time the outcome is excellent! It is the most amazing thing to draw a sample from a little one and then get a high five at the end.”

Mike puts extra time and thoughtfulness in all he does and embraces the different values and perspectives of his patients. He works to see things from their viewpoint. It’s not easy to be liked as a phlebotomist by your patients. For many, facing a needle is incredibly difficult. But Mike’s special attention helps patients get through it. Mike is an asset to the phlebotomy department and exemplifies the values of Cooley Dickinson.

Thank you, Michael for making a difference!

You Make a Difference Award: June , 2021

Marilyn Payne

Congratulations to Marilyn Payne, Physical Therapist at Worthington Rehabilitation, on being selected as the June Honoree of the You Make a Difference Award!

The You Make A Difference Award is recognition for team members who live up to the values of our organization and are making a difference for patients, coworkers, and in the community.

Marilyn is the sole Physical Therapist at our Worthington Rehabilitation Clinic. Over the years, Marilyn has treated thousands of patients in the Hilltowns and does so from a single room clinic, by herself. During a major ice and windstorm in February 2020, the Worthington clinic was without internet service, which meant Marilyn had no access to the electronic medical record of her patients. This did not stop Marilyn from acting with integrity and upholding quality by managing to still see her patients and document on paper charts until the internet service was restored. Marilyn did this without worry or concern for managing her work. Marilyn knew she needed to put her patients first to assure they stayed on track with their treatments, regardless of her situation. Fun fact: Marilyn has been known to ski into work during a winter storm, knowing her patients would need her care whether it was snowing or not!

Marilyn is well respected by the residents of the Hilltowns for her skill, expertise, and composed nature. Marilyn has persevered through the challenging COVID times and assured her patients received exceptional care regardless of the obstacles she faced. Marilyn makes a difference in her patients’ lives every day because of her dedication to her work and to them.

Thank you, Marilyn for making a difference!

Want to personally congratulate Marilyn?

Send a Kudos for Coworkers and thank her for her amazing work!

COVID Vaccine Clinic Team

The Cooley Dickinson COVID Vaccine Clinic Team was honored with the You Make a Difference Team Award, which recognizes teams that live up to Cooley Dickinson’s values and who make a difference for patients and families, coworkers, and in our community every day.

The Cooley Dickinson vaccine program relies on a committed group of greeters, vaccinators, schedulers, pharmacy staff and many others behind the scenes who work on the logistics and operations of the clinic. This team’s primary focus since December has been to directly put shots in arms or support the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine to Cooley Dickinson health care workers, patients, and community members.

This enormous vaccination undertaking is due to the work of hundreds of staff. Thanks to all of you, the clinics operated smoothly, and we were able to vaccinate many of our coworkers and community members.

Thanks to the commitment and dedication of our vaccine operations staff and volunteers, we have vaccinated over 13,000 community members and the Mass General Brigham system has surpassed 250,000 employee and patient vaccines.

We recognize the Vaccine Clinic Team, for their commitment to upholding quality, fostering collaboration, and providing exceptional, compassionate and personalized care to our patients!

Congratulations to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Team on being chosen as the recipient of the January You Make a Difference Team Award!

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Team performed incredible work during the height of the COVID pandemic. A team who typically works strictly day shifts treating inpatient and ED patients came together and established a proning team to support the inpatient units treating COVID patients.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Team developed a schedule to assure coverage 24/7 to support the CCU and the North 3 staff in providing the care needed by this vulnerable population of patients. It has been proven through many studies that providing this type of treatment and care to COVID patients improved their chance of survival.

“This group worked quietly and tirelessly to be there when needed” said Cathy Reed, Director of Lab Services, who nominated this team for the award. Adding “when I hear the phrase ‘there are heroes all around us in plain sight’, this group of phenomenal professionals come to mind.”

Stacy Troy

Congratulations to Stacy Troy, Physical Therapist at Hadley Rehabilitation, on being chosen as the recipient of the January You Make a Difference Award!

Stacy specializes in pelvic floor rehabilitation and restoration which provides a vital service to the Pioneer Valley that is usually only found near a large city. This field continues to advance and expand at a rapid pace and Stacy regularly attends continuing education activities in Boston, both as a student and lab instructor. Stacy has been recognized by Hollis Herman (National Pelvic PT Guru based in Boston) as a preferred pelvic clinician in Western Mass.

Pelvic issues are often not something people are comfortable talking about. These issues can be embarrassing for patients and very personal. Tackling them can have an enormous impact on a person’s life. “Stacy recognizes the emotional challenges that come with navigating these conditions and provides a safe and empathetic space for patients to address them” said her nominator, Dennis Mathewson, PT at Hadley Rehabilitation, adding “She is particularly passionate about ensuring access to, and awareness of her services to the transgender and trans-sexual community.”

Stacy has always been a leader for the LGBTQ community and is presently the LGBTQ leader for the CDHC rehabilitation department. She is a strong advocate for providing her expertise to all patients, regardless of socioeconomic status, transportation, disability or health insurance.  On October 25, 2018, Stacy received the annual Paul Winske Access Award from the Stavros Center for Independent Living.  Stacy was nominated by her patients for providing compassionate care to persons with disabilities.  Stacy was the only health care professional recognized at the awards ceremony that year.

Stacy is a fantastic resource for the entire rehab department, surgeons, and primary care providers throughout the Pioneer Valley. She works closely with area surgeons from Boston, Hartford, Brattleboro and Springfield to make sure patients are provided with the proper post-surgical care, education, and support they need.  She is the “go-to” clinician for pelvic questions and it’s reassuring for the entire rehab dept. and hospital staff to know they can send their friends and family to a trusted and skilled clinician. She strongly advocates for staff to become more aware of pelvic issues and how to navigate and support the LGBTQ community in their clinical practice.

Thank you, Stacy. You are truly making a difference!

You Make A Difference Team Award, Summer, 2020

Electronic Lab Fax (ELF) Team

Earlier this week, the Electronic Lab Fax team – Ed Borowski and Tom Rock, of Information Systems, and Alison Gronbeck, Dawn Gatzounas, and Cathy Reed all from the Lab – were honored with the You Make a Difference team award, which recognizes teams that live up to Cooley Dickinson’s values and who make a difference for patients and families, coworkers, and in our community every day.

The Challenge
Since the implementation of Epic and Sunquest, the process of faxing reports from Sunquest has presented challenges, such as the inability for STAT results to be auto faxed or, providers not properly receiving patient’s lab results, who were not set up in the fax table.

A Cross-Functional Team’s Solution
Something needed to be done and it was this group of people who came together to discuss solutions. Ed Borowski was able to write a computer program affectionately known as ELF (Electronic Lab Fax) and the Electronic Lab Fax team was formed. This program receives all lab results from Epic, places them into the report format designed by the team and faxes them to the providers based on the information defined in Epic.

By using computer programming, the system holds a patient’s completed results for 30 minutes to give an opportunity for any additional lab results to complete. It will then combine the results into one report to minimize the number of sheets that are faxed. Because reports fax every 30 minutes, there is no longer a need for staff to manually track STAT orders to completion.

Patient-Centered Care
ELF’s success was demonstrated to a group of Mass General Brigham facilities, that were struggling with the same issue and were seeking a solution. The creation of ELF assures that all laboratory reports are getting to the patient’s provider and ensures that our patients are getting the follow up and care they need.

Thank you, Electronic Lab Fax team, for your innovation and commitment to continuous improvement! You are making a difference!

You Make A Difference Award, July, 2020

Hannah Collins-Wolfe

Congratulations to ICU Registered Nurse Hannah Collins-Wolfe on being chosen as the recipient of the You Make a Difference Award! The You Make a Difference Award is recognition for individuals that are making a difference for patients and families, and for their coworkers. Hannah’s nominator described her as “one of those nurses that you want working with you every time you are scheduled. She anticipates both your needs and the needs of our patients.”

When a patient comes onto the unit, Hannah, pictured, third from left with her ICU colleagues, is always the first one in the room to help settle them.  When the unit is short-staffed, you can count on Hannah to come in to help, because she knows our patients need care. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed, there comes Hannah into your patient’s room to help.

During the height of our COVID-19 surge, Hannah made sure to check in with other staff members to make sure that they were okay, knowing the difficult toll this pandemic was taking on everyone.  She helped to orient re-located staff members and made sure they felt comfortable and well-supported in the ICU.

Hannah is the epitome of teamwork and does it all with a positive attitude and a smile on her face. We appreciate Hannah for her amazing sense of teamwork.

Thank you, Hannah. You are making a difference!

Or in the Pulmonary Function Lab, testing patients breathing, while at the same time, easing their anxiety about such a difficult test.

Thank you Respiratory Therapy Team, YOU are making a difference!

Shoshanna Brady

The You Make A Difference Award nominations that were submitted back in January were originally planned to be celebrated over the last few months but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the recognition plans were put on hold.

We are happy to announce that the recognition celebrations for the recipients of the You Make A Difference Award have started back up and although the recognition may look different the honor of this award remains the same.

Shoshanna Brady, MSW is the recipient of the You Make A Difference Award and was honored earlier in the week during a virtual Zoom celebration.

Shoshanna’s nominator described her as a role model for our mission, vision, values and standard of behavior here at Cooley Dickinson.

Jodi Gordon

“Proactive, Solutions-Oriented, Quick on her Feet: Congratulations to Jodi Gordon, Recipient of the February You Make a Difference Award

Clinical Business Analyst Jodi Gordon, pictured above with, from left, Lorin Baumgarten, Robb Levine and Estevan Garcia, is a wonderful example of an employee who routinely goes above and beyond to support her team and the organization. Specifically, her work and collaboration with the providers in OB and in peri-operative services is where she shines. These areas can be challenging to support because the issues that emerge can quickly impact patient care (aka, during a birth or a procedure). Jodi is proactive, solutions-oriented, and quick to think on her feet.

Always friendly, Jodi is known for being a trusted team member and collaborator by both her team and the departments she supports. Her passion to care excellence and her dedication to the end users she supports is truly remarkable. Jodi’s ability to remain even keeled, professional, and compassionate, even in the most stressful of situations, puts the people around her at ease.

Jodi is a role model to her colleagues and embraces the many cultural attributes that our organization strives for: fostering collaboration, continuous improvement, and upholding quality, are just a few examples of where Jodi excels. Not only does Jodi embrace our organizational standards, she models the degree of excellence we all should strive for.

Thank you, Jodi. You are making a difference!

You Make A Difference Team Award, Winter 2019

Central Sterile Processing Team

The Central Sterile Processing team may not always be the first team to come to mind when thinking about what makes Cooley Dickinson Hospital tick, but the work they do is essential to daily operations. This team ensures that the important tools of the health care trade are available for all our providers on demand.

In February of this year, the VA Central Western Mass Healthcare System reached out to Cooley Dickinson with an urgent need—a broken water pipe had completely shut down their Central Sterile processing unit, and without it they would not be able to continue to provide services for area veterans. Cooley Dickinson’s Central Sterile Processing team stepped up and within a few short days was processing equipment from the VA in addition to the equipment they regularly process for Cooley.

This was no easy task. The VA has a different process for their equipment. Under the guidance of the VA team, our hard-working crew quickly learned the new instruments, processes, and packaging requirements to meet the community need. In a three-week period, the CSP team processed thousands of instruments for the VA on top of their normal workload. The staff were extremely committed to upholding quality, even while they extended their hours late into the evening to get the job done.

Chief of Staff VA Central Western Mass Healthcare System Seth Kupferschmid, MD, said “the collaboration went very well. We were impressed at the responsiveness of management at CDH on a Sunday afternoon to having supports in place on Monday morning. The 3 weeks of help kept services at the VA operational. Of course, we send thanks to all at CDH.”

Thank you for showing your support of our community and rising to the challenge! You are making a difference!

You Make A Difference Award, March 2019

Skarlleth Kauffmann, PCA

North 3 Patient Care Associate Skarlleth Kauffmann is the winner of the March You Make A Difference Award because of her kindness and dedication to Cooley Dickinson patients. Nurse Manager Nicole Fisette says that Skarlleth’s coworkers describe her as someone who is “gentle, conscientious, and a pleasure to work with.” She is known to use her own form of medicine—humor, laughter, and the ability to be in the moment—to craft experiences for her patients that exceed typical expectations for a hospital stay.

One example of her commitment to patient experience and well-being happened when she found out that a patient was just a few days away from celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary. Skarlleth talked with the patient about writing a love letter to their spouse, and provided them with pen and paper. That might be enough for some, but not for Skarlleth, who found out the couple’s wedding song, and talked a friend into learning to play the song. She picked up a bouquet of roses and an anniversary card, and arranged for a sweet, kind-hearted surprise.  The patient’s spouse and family arrived for a visit and were serenaded with an impromptu performance and celebration as they walked into the room.

Thank you Skarlleth, for putting our patients first! You Make A Difference!

One particular story stands out. When Tammie was leaving work one day, she happened upon a patient who was being discharged and waiting for a cab. Tammie was worried that the patient was not well enough to be discharged, so she took the time to stop, take vitals, and reach out to nursing and transport staff. Tammie followed the patient home to make sure they were able to get home safely. The patient was later readmitted. Tammie trusts in her good instincts and skills, which makes a difference for all of our patients.
